2021 AMAs Lifetime Achievement Awards Winner – Leonard Brown of the Controllers

LeNard Brown is an internationally known producer, writer, arranger and entrepreneur. He is one of the original members of the famous American soul & R & B vocal group called The Controllers originally part of an eight-member gospel group, the group became four in number and was made up of: LeNard Brown, Ricky Lewis, Larry McArthur and Reginald McArthur. Their growing reputation in the Birmingham area led to an introduction to Cleveland Eaton, bassist for the Ramsey Lewis Trio. Under Eaton’s guidance, The Soul Controllers, as they were then called, recorded their first single called “Right On Brother, Right On,” which became a hit while the teens were still attending Fairfield High School.

The members were constantly taken out of school to sing. The Controllers became famous for their incredible stage performances. Their most popular song, “Somebody’s got to win, Somebody’s got to lose,” catapulted them into stardom. The group went on to create 5 gold albums, 18 hit records and top 40 with various record labels Juana, CMP, MCA, Capitol and Malaco on the billboard charts. Stevie Wonder made a guest appearance on harmonica for their first MCA single, “Crushed”.

The men have traveled all over the world, appearing multiple times on Soul Train, MTV, BET, HBO and at Carnegie Hall. They sold out radio city music hall for two nights in a row and have performed in stadiums packed with more 90,000 people. The Controllers have opened shows for James Brown, Ray Charles, Nancy Wilson, Commodores, B. B. King The Temptations – just about every major artist that you can possibly name. He previously owned his own record company. His love for music and creativity is still on the up rise with his most recent new single “Clone” and “Do It Right Now” available on all streaming platforms!

LeNard Brown created the #1 rated and very popular syndicated radio talk show, Inside The Juke Joint on 987 KISS FM. He has hosted more than 700 shows. The show has been #1 during the 8am-10am time period for 15 years. He has interviewed top artists and producers, Three Dog Night, The Jacksons, Kenny Gamble, Smokey Robinson, William “Mickey” Stevenson, Delfonics, Michael Henderson, Eddie LeVert, Bill Withers, and many more. Listeners tune in to hear artists, songwriters, arrangers and musicians talk about the industry, their careers and lives. He celebrates life daily by giving gifts of service to the world. Through monetary donations and community services such as scholarships to his alma mater Fairfield High School and thousands of dollars to St. Jude Hospital to name a few. He’s also a Disaster Coordinator. He played an intricate part and was very instrumental in the creation of Eddie Kendricks Park, making it a reality.

In his spare time he has raced cars for Goodyear, Dodge Corporations and Mothers Against Drunk Driving. He is a loving and caring father of a handsome son and grandfather (Paw-paw)of three beautiful grandchildren.
